The Importance of Using Hand Sanitizer

When there is visible or invisible pollution, hand sanitizers are used to prevent the spread of pathogenic microorganisms to our own bodies, other people, or surfaces. The most common and safest hand sanitizers are alcohol-based. Hand sanitizer is a substance usually in liquid or gel form used to reduce bacteria on the hands. When washing your hands with soap and water in a hygienic environment, using alcohol-based products is the best option.

Hand sanitizers are more effective than soap and water in killing microorganisms. It is important to wash your hands, except for using hand sanitizing gel, when you use the toilet or when there is visible contamination. Alcohol-free hand sanitizers are generally not recommended. Hand washing is usually the preferred option outside of healthcare environments. They are also less effective against microorganisms such as Norovirus and Clostridium difficile. They are available in liquid, gel, and foam forms. They contain alcohols such as isopropanol, ethanol, or n-propanol. Those containing 60% to 95% alcohol are the most effective. They are flammable, so caution must be exercised. Alcohol-based hand sanitizers can kill microorganisms but cannot kill spores. Some types contain compounds such as glycerin to prevent dry skin. Alcohol-free versions may contain benzalkonium chloride or triclosan.

When using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer:

Apply the product to the palm of one hand.

Rub your hands together.

Spread the product over all surfaces of your hands and fingers until they are dry.

Keep away from flames, gas stoves, or burning objects when using hand sanitizer.

How to use hand sanitizer?

To be effective, it should be poured into the palm of the hand and spread from the palm to the wrist, between the fingers on the outside of the hand. It should be spread quickly on the hands as it can evaporate rapidly and kill bacteria and viruses in just 2 seconds.
